This 9-day itinerary is a great introduction for first time visitors to Sri Lanka and for those with limited time who want to see the main sights of this teardrop island.  Starting in the vibrant city of Colombo, you experience the diversity of Sri Lanka, from its cities to it’s ancient monuments, and it’s  rolling tea plantations through to it’s stunning coastline; it really is so much more than just a beach destination.

Best time to go

Sri Lanka is a year round destination depending on which side of the island you choose.  The South West and North East have different weather patterns, but the peak time for the best weather is December to mid-April. Travelling in the shoulder seasons, particularly July to August has many advantages.


Day 1: UK Departure

Overnight flight to Colombo.

Day 2: Casa Colombo (BB)

On arrival, you'll be met and transferred by private vehicle to Casa Colombo where you'll spend your first night. In the afternoon enjoy a private city tour to include a visit to Fort, the bustling centre of town, monuments such as the President’s Residence, Cargills and Millers, the old lighthouse that has become a clock tower,  the historic Davatagaha Mosque, and the oldest Dutch Church in Colombo, the Wolvendhaal.

Day 3: Jetwing Vil Uyana (HB)

This morning, transfer by private vehicle north to Sigiriya and to the Jetwing Vil Uyana which will be your base for the next two nights.  This hotel is a haven for nature lovers and enjoys views of Sigiriya Rock.

Day 4: Jetwing Vil Uyana (HB)

Today is sure to be a highlight of the itinerary as you climb the 5th century citadel of Sigiriya, considered the 8th wonder of the world.  A fortified city with moats, ramparts and gardens, this is a must-see for any visitor to Sri Lanka. In the afternoon you'll return to the hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 5: The Kandy House (HB)

Transfer by private vehicle to Dambulla to view the cave temples, adorned with hundreds of rock paintings of Buddha and many kings and deities. Continue south from Dambulla to Kandy, the hill capital of Sri Lanka which is a journey of two hours. On arrival, visit the Temple of the Tooth, the third holiest Buddhist site in the world before proceding to The Kandy House where you spend the next two nights. 

Day 6: The Kandy House (HB)

Start the day with a private city tour of Kandy. This beautiful city, surrounded by hills and valleys, rivers, lakes and cascading waterfalls is also home to the Royal Botanical gardens at Peradeniya. You'll spend your afternoon at leisure before enjoying a Kandyan cultural dance performance in the evening.

Days 7-8: Aditya Hotel Resort. (BB)

Today you'll continue on South to the small beach resort of Hikkaduwa near Galle, a journey time of four hours.  You'll spend your final two nights at the Aditya Hotel Resort, a lovely beach hotel ideally situated close to the  Dutch colonial city of Galle, famous for its UNESCO-protected Fort; and to Mirissa, one of the best places in the country to go whale-watching.

Day 9: Departure

Return to Colombo today, arriving in time for your return flight to the UK.
