Glimpse of Kerala and Backwaters
You begin your 11-day tour of India in Cochin, with its protected harbour made popular with seafarers and merchant ships who made frequent stops to stock up on spices, coffee and wood before moving onto the tea growing area of Munnar with its cool valley climate. At Theakkady, enjoy a spice tour before a visit to Periyar National Park where you get the chance to see elephants, sambars, tigers and gaurs. Climb on board your converted rice boat in Alleppey and cruise through the narrow canals, rice fields and local villages finishing in Kumarakom where a million coconut palms line the rivers.

Day 1: UK departure
Fly overnight from London to Cochin.
Day 2: Vivanta by Taj (BB)
Upon arrival meet your local guide and take a private transfer to Vivanta by Taj to check in.
In the afternoon enjoy a private walking tour of Mattancherry followed by a local tuk tuk ride. Highlights include spice warehouses, artists, painters, photographers, hidden shrines, boutiques doing intricate hand embroidery work, cafes and restaurants.
Day 3: Vivanta by Taj (BB)
Today you start your day with a private half day tour of the city. Highlights include the oldest Jewish Synagogue in India built in 1568, Chinese fishing nets, St. Francis Church and The Dutch Palace which was built in 1555.
In the evening see a classical Indian dance show, Kathakali, a traditional ritualistic art form used for centuries to preserve the stories of Vedas. Elaborate costumes and gestures makes the Kathakali dancers something special to behold.
Day 4: Spice Tree (BB)
This morning you transfer by private vehicle to Munnar, a journey of 4 hours. On arrival, check into The Spice Tree and the rest of the day is at leisure.
Day 5: Spice Tree (BB)
This morning you visit the Tata Tea museum which portrays the growth of Munnar tea estates, from the rudimentary tea roller through to the modern fully automated tea factory. Visitors to the museum can satiate their curiosity on the various stages of tea processing, and also learn a thing or two about the production of black tea.
Day 6: Niraamaya Cardamom Club (BB)
This morning you transfer by private vehicle to Thekkady, a journey of 3 hours. On arrival, check in to the Niraamaya Cardamom Club and the rest of the afternoon is at leisure.
In the evening you visit the Kerala Kalari Centre, a great place to witness the ancient Kalaripayattu martial dance performed and practised by dedicated local swordsmen. Traditional masters of the art form perform skits from mythology to entertain the public and show off their swordsmanship.
Day 7: Niraamaya Cardamom Club (BB)
This morning, enjoy a guided walk through a spice plantation where you can learn about the cultivation of cardamom, pepper, vanilla and coffee. You then visit Periyar National Park where you can enjoy a traditional elephant walk either in the Park or in the streets of Kerala. Five elephants live in this farm and you get the chance to interact with the elephants, feeding and bathing them.
In the afternoon take a shared boat ride on Lake Periyar. Game found here includes gaur (the largest of the world's wild oxen), elephant, wild pig, sambar, barking deer, mouse deer, the rare and endangered lion-tailed macaque, the Nilgiri langur, the common langur and the bonnet macaque, porcupine, Malabar squirrel, wild dog and tiger.
Day 8: Houseboat (FB)
After breakfast, you transfer by private vehicle to Alleppey Jetty, a journey of approximately 3 hours where you climb aboard your converted traditional rice boat, complete with bedroom and attached facilities for your backwater cruise.
This cruise takes you through the narrow canals that criss-cross a typical Kerala Village, rich with green paddy fields and verdant coconut trees and is a thrilling experience.
Day 9: Kumarakom Lake (BB)
After enjoying an on board breakfast, you disembark and are transferred by private vehicle to Kumarakom, a journey of 1 hour. Upon arrival check into Kumarakom Lake hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 10: Kumarakom Lake (BB)
Today is free for you to enjoy at leisure.
Day 11: Departure
Transfer to Cochin airport for your departure flight to the UK.
