Why Colour Can Affect How Your Travel

Many of us do not recognise how much colour has an effect on our lives. As humans, we experience various emotions depending on what colours we are exposed to. This could be the icy bluer hues on the alps or the roaring reds and oranges of the sand dunes in Egypt - colour can make us feel happy, sad, calm or angry. Travel provides a unique way to look at colour too - a break from the colours of your natural surroundings expands your visual repertoire, helping you to see a place differently as you once did, which could, in turn, lead to a deeper understanding of it. In order to expand your horizons, we have put together a list of some of the most colourful destinations on the planet.

Lake Natron, Tanzania

Based on the northern border of Kenya and Tanzania, the blood-red Lake Natron is said to be one of the most inhospitable places on earth. With its high salt content and being above 120 degrees, thew only beings that survive in the lake are the red algae. During the dry season, you can spot the largest population of flamingos laying their eggs on the lake.

Namib Sand Dunes, Namibia

Aside from the blasting vibrancy of orange tones that cascade over the Namib Desert, these dunes are in fact some of the oldest and highest dunes on earth, with one of then standing a staggering 1,256 feet. To see the dunes in all their glory, get started early in the morning.

Royal Palace, Fez, Morocco

Also known as Dar al-Makhzen, this 17th-century palace is unfortunately not open to visitors, nevertheless, it does not stop travellers from photographing the seven golden gates. The individual brass doors are covered with an intricate pattered which is then surrounded with vibrant tilework.

Mu Cang Chai Rice Terrace Fields, Vietnam

The stunning layers of the Mu Chang Rice Fields have become one of the worlds most Instagrammed destination. Each year, the colours change from green (in late spring and summer) to yellow (in October) as the rice ripens. Mu Cang Chai is among the top destinations for any nature lovers who love to experience natural fundamentals.

Scotia Sea, Antarctica

If you ever wanted to see one of natures true wonders of the world, look no further than the icebergs of Antartica. These sharp-edged mountains practically glow with a pale blue iciness. As Antarctica is a continent that few people can say they have experienced, our tip to see this natural wonder is by boat. However, remember that due to the limited visiting months, Antartica cruises sell out very quickly, so it is best to book as early as possible.

Chefchaouen, Morocco

Whilst this may not be the easiest destination to get to, this indigo city in the Rif Mountains is still a popular destination for travellers. All of the buildings are painted in a dreamy indigo colour, with some of the streets and steps painted in this hue around the town. In the 1930s Jewish refugees moved here from Spain, painting there houses blue to reflect the divine. You will also find jaw-dropping views of the surrounding mountains. If you would like to get a real view of the entire town, take a 20-minute hike up to the Grande Mosquee.

Kawachi Fuji Gardens, Kitakyushu, Japan

Japan may be well known for its gorgeous pink cherry blossoms, however, the violet wisteria trees blossom just as beautifully for a few weeks every spring. The best time to see these stunning flowers bloom is in late April or early May at the wisteria tunnel. At other times throughout the year, you will see bare branches instead of the lush abundance of flowers.
