Tracy Reviews The Siam

It’s never a hardship to have to stopover in Bangkok - this bustling metropolis is my favourite Asian city. In recent years I have mostly stayed in the centre, near to Silom, where the world is at my feet. On my last visit I changed tack, and chose the Siam which is set on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. This riverside beauty, a mere 20 minute boat ride from The Grand Palace, is a marvel to behold and a world away from the tourist side of Bangkok.

My room, a Mae Nam suite, was vast - all 90sqm of art deco brilliance with every mod con on tap, and a butler to cater for my every need. After a long and exhausting flight I decided to head straight for the Opium Spa for a 90 minute Muay Thai massage. This deep tissue, limb-stretching massage certainly sorted me out and left me fully invigorated. After a quick swim in the lap pool I was fit for anything, so I leapt aboard their boat shuttle for a bit of retail therapy, Bangkok-style.

Returning by boat, I had dinner at the Siam’s signature Thai restaurant – Chon Thai. Spicy rice soup was followed by sea bass in lemongrass, and the food was sensational. I was not surprised to see the restaurant full of locals as well as in-house guests, as right now it is on the lips of those in the know in Bangkok, and is ‘the’ hangout for brunch and dinner. Sleep came easy in the super comfortable beds, (the mattresses are imported from the US), and I found it difficult to leave the comfort for my early morning gym session. But it was worth it - they have a perfect gym, with state-of-the-art equipment and a life-size Muay Thai boxing ring. I was hyped up for the gym as I knew I would follow with a morning in the Spa. I was met by Dr Adrish, the resident wellness doctor, and did some yoga which was challenging but which stretched out all my tension, and gave me great mobility and flexibility. You can also do meditation sessions, Ayurveda consultations, Reiki and private yoga.

It is no wonder the Siam won best city spa recently in the Conde Nast Spa Guide, as not only is it as pretty as a picture, but the quality of the treatments and therapists are top notch and the new holistic journeys are meaningful and really work. This hotel is a sensation, and will suit everyone.

My recommendation: book a courtyard pool villa - not only can you cool off in your very own pool, buy you also have your own garden and upstairs sun deck. They also face the river, which is a lovely distraction if you suffer from jet-lag.
