The Datai Launches Junk Cruises

One of Asia’s most iconic hotels, The Datai, may be set amongst ancient virgin rainforest, but guests can now explore the remarkable Langkawi archipelago that provides its backdrop by sea, as the hotel announces an exclusive new experience for residents. A 97- foot hand-built Malaysian junk schooner, The Naga Pelangi is the first, and only, traditional Malay sailing boat for charter in Malaysia.  Traditionally used for cargo and piracy, The Naga Pelangi will be available for cruises from 2 hours to day-long, whilst a regularly scheduled Sunset Cocktail Cruise promises a blaze of colours as the sun goes down on these remarkable islands.

The Naga Pelangi (which translates as Rainbow Dragon) was commissioned by its Captain, Christoph Swaboda, to help ensure the survival of the traditional techniques used to build this vessel. Built without plans, the craftsmen boat-builders start with the hull, before building the frames, utilising techniques said to originate thousands of years ago. From the decks of this truly special vantage point, you can explore the 99 islands – only 3 of which are inhabited – that make this corner of the earth so heartbreakingly beautiful.

Discovery Cruise: This 4 hour round trip takes guests from the Datai Bay to the south eastern coast of Koh Tarutao.  Enjoy a swim on the sheltered leeward side of the scenic islands of Koh Panan and Koh Belitong Besar, before climbing back on board for a picnic lunch as you sail in the Selat Chinchin until it is time to return.
Day Cruise: The Naga Pelangi takes you to the west coast of scenic, uninhabited Tarutao island, a national Marine Park of Thailand, where you can picnic, swim and kayak. The Captain and crew will also give you an introduction to the handling of this ancient Chinese sail.
Sunset Cocktail Cruise: Make the most of the sunset with an evening cruise in the calm waters of Datai Bay, as you enjoy canapés and an open bar.

The ultimate sundowner? Private “Indulgence” charter: bespoke itineraries are created, with options including on-board head, shoulder and foot massages, and a private chef on board to serve a deluxe set lunch and free flow of champagne and other beverages!
