Our Favourite Things to do in Bali

Bali is a dream holiday destination for many of us, its verdant forests and golden beaches welcoming more visitors than any of the other Indonesian islands. Often referred to as ‘The Island of the Gods’ there is so much to see, do, and discover here, so much so that it can be a little overwhelming knowing where to begin! We’ve created a list of some of our favourite things to do in Bali so you too can be swept up by the magic of this enchanting island that will have you coming back time and time again.

Go Trekking in the Jungles

With much of this island covered by tranquil emerald forests, you should certainly make some time to explore them during your stay. Home to beautiful sights and plenty of wildlife, a trek through one of these natural havens is sure to yield some incredible moments. On a jungle trek you can expect to see animals such as monkeys, exotic birds, and various kinds of reptile, as well as different species of plants, waterfalls and more.

Try Scuba Diving

As well as its land creatures, Bali is just as, if not more famous for those that dwell under the sea, making it a very popular diving destination. There are plenty of great dive spots all over the island, but if you want to be in with the chance of spotting species such as the elusive Mola Mola we recommend heading to Nusa Pendina a small island just off the coast of Bali where sightings are most frequent.

Pamper Yourself at a Spa

When in Bali be sure to take the time to visit one of its many spas and enjoy a famous Balinese massage, as well as the many other amazing treatments on offer. Whether enjoyed on your own as part of a solo trip or with that special someone on a more romantic break, a visit to one of Bali’s spas is sure to be a special experience. We recommend heading over to our sister site Healing Holidays where you can find plenty more information on spa breaks in Bali.

Watch a Traditional Dance Performance

Bali is an island with a rich and vibrant culture, one that shows a great appreciation for the arts. A great way to immerse yourself in Bali’s culture is to watch a traditional Balinese dance performance. Not only are the dance performances theatrical and beautiful to watch, but they reveal a part of Bali’s culture that has been passed down through history.

Sample Local Dishes

Balinese food is varied and could easily warrant its own blog post, but to keep things brief we recommend trying as much of it as possible during your time in Bali. Especially make a point of trying local delicacies such as Nasi Goreng, a type of fried rice dish, and Martabak, most commonly sold by street vendors. These delicious dishes are sure to leave you wanting more, even after your time in Bali has come to an end.

Spend Some Time on the Beaches

Bali’s beaches are perhaps what the island is most known for, and with good reason, they are easily some of the most beautiful in the world. Inviting you in with powdery white sands and warm, sparkling water, a day (or several) spent on the beaches of Bali is an essential part of any trip to this island. If you fancy some simple beachside R&R we recommend Nusa Dua, while if you fancy giving surfing a go Kuta beach is a popular choice with many.

Visit a Local Village

A great way to see the local way of life, as well as admire the beauty of Bali’s rural areas, a visit to a local village promises to be a special experience. Talk to the locals, the people of Bali are known for their friendliness, and admire the beautiful countryside and rice paddies that surround you, this is sure to be a memorable experience for anyone who want to get to know the real Bali.

Visit the Temples

There are plenty of beautiful temples to be found on Bali featuring unique architecture and we urge you to take the time to visit them and appreciate their intricate design. Tanah Lot located in West Bali is one of the most popular due to its unique offshore setting, while Ulun Danu Beratan is another picturesque option worth visiting.

Try White Water Rafting

If you fancy doing something adventurous, Bali is a great destination for white water rafting. We love Ayung River for this as you get to watch beautiful forests and rice paddies pass you by, all while enjoying an exhilarating experience that will certainly get your adrenaline pumping.

Hike Mount Batur

The views that can be enjoyed from a hike up Mount Batur are incredible, and the fact that it’s actually an active volcano is sure to add an extra thrill to proceedings. We recommend making the extra effort to wake up as early as you can to begin your hike in time to catch sunrise at the top when the views are at their most beautiful. Not the most strenuous of hikes, even beginners can enjoy this activity.
