The Strand Yangon Reopens Following Renovation

26 October 2016

Following a 6 month renovation period, it has been announced that the Strand Yangon is set to reopen on November 15 2016. The Strand Yangon has long stood as one of the grandest and most iconic hotels in Yangon, if not the whole of Myanmar, and it is hoped that the recent renovation will only continue to further its reputation.

Founded in 1901 by the Sarkies brothers as a luxury colonial outpost, the renovation work intends to bring the hotel into the 21st Century, while still retaining its elegance and heritage. A team of local artisans have been working to restore all the original architectural details, from the teak wood panelling and antique bedsteads, to traditional Myanmar lacquer ware and marble flooring. The hotel’s 31 lavish rooms and suites have also received an update, with the traditional décor being complemented by new original artwork and vintage-style textiles, as well as modern amenities such as air-conditioning units and other technology.

While much has been updated throughout the resort, guests can still expect to be greeted with the same friendly and unrivalled hospitality that The Strand prides themselves on providing. During the closure period the experienced team of staff have undergone extensive training so they are now even more equipped to provide guests with the best service they’ve ever received.

Changes have also been made to The Strand’s dining options, with the elegant Strand Restaurant reopening on the 1 December 2016 under a new executive chef, Christian Martena, who has trained at some of Europe’s most famous Michelin-starred restaurants before running his own kitchen in Bangkok. The hotel’s famous bar has also seen some changes, with it being renamed to The Sarkies Bar after the hotel’s founders, and seeing a refresh to the décor as well as a menu featuring a selection of new cocktails and single malt whiskies.
