Summary

Surrounded by the stunning panoramas of Sri Lanka’s Hill Country, Mas Villa boasts a fascinating history that goes back some two hundred and fifty years. Once the home of the illustrious political leader Hon. Gamini Dissanayake, this imposing manor house evokes the elegant atmosphere and time-honoured traditions of the country’s colonial past. Friendly service and exquisite interiors are all part of the Mas Villa experience, as is the beauty of the hotel’s natural setting. From the main courtyard and verandah of the house, guests are treated to breathtaking views of the Kotmale Reservoir, and of the terraced paddy fields and hillside tea plantations for which this region is famous. The key to Mas Villa’s charm is consequently its rural splendour, and its ability to transport its guests back in time to a simpler, more sophisticated era.

Highlights

  • Indulge in the spa services of the villa’s resident therapist
  • Marvel at the beauty of the valley at night, with a candlelit dinner on the villa’s verandah
  • Spend the day boating and fishing on the Kotmale Reservoir
  • Learn about the making of pure Ceylon tea on a tour of a nearby tea estate

Location

Kotmale, Sri Lanka

Best time to go

Due to the elevated position of Kotmale Valley, the weather at Mas Villa often provides a welcome respite from the sweltering heat of the Sri Lankan lowlands. Between October and December the region experiences heavy rain as a result of the monsoon; whilst the driest time of year runs from June to September.

Our thoughts

Mas Villa offers its guests an insight into the grandeur of its historic past, whilst also providing the excellent service and extensive facilities expected of a modern boutique hotel. The surrounding area provides ample opportunity for adventure, too- from swimming in the reservoir, to exploring the Hill Country’s traditional villages and hidden temples.

  Dining

Dining at Mas Villa is an informal affair, allowing guests to choose when and where they would like to eat. Here, it is possible to dine al fresco in the garden, in the comfort of your own room, or overlooking the mesmerising vistas of Mas Villa’s dedicated dining verandah. All dishes at the mansion are made from organically grown produce, much of which comes directly from the garden and the surrounding area. Sri Lankan cuisine features on the menu throughout the day, complemented by Continental fare at breakfast and Asian favourites at lunch. In the evening, guests may select from an exquisite set menu that changes every day, and offers a range of different cuisines delivered with a distinctive Mas Villa twist.

Mas Villa features six charming guest rooms situated at ground level, in addition to a stunning master suite that occupies the entirety of the mansion’s upstairs floor. All seven rooms are named after plants growing in the mansion’s beautifully manicured garden, and follow their own distinct theme.

Jasmine

This cosy bedroom is the only one to offer two twin beds instead of a double, and features a private sitting area that looks out onto the garden and the courtyard beyond.

Heliconia

As the most intimate of Mas Villa’s deluxe rooms, Heliconia offers picture-perfect views both of the valley’s terraced paddy fields, and of the region’s distant mountains.

Calathea

Decorated in shades of aubergine and chocolate brown, this deluxe room radiates modern minimalism and boasts inspiring views of the surrounding countryside. Calathea adjoins Sanderiana and as such is the perfect choice for families or groups travelling together.

Sanderiana

The largest and most classically decorated of the three deluxe rooms, Sanderiana offers jaw dropping vistas of the central courtyard, the mansion’s beautiful gardens, and the verdant mountains beyond.

Dracaena

One of two superior rooms at Mas Villa, Dracaena features a spacious sitting area in addition to a luxurious bedroom and en-suite bathroom. This room also offers expansive views of the swimming pool and the terraced paddy fields.

Oleander

A new addition to Mas Villa, this second superior room is similar to Dracaena in terms of size and amenities. It opens out onto a small private garden, and enjoys breathtaking views of the distant mountains.

Cordyline

This majestic master suite occupies the entire first floor of Mas Villa and features spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding Hill Country.
